The
Learning Project was founded in 1973 by a group of people who believed in the
unique ability of small schools to empower young children in extraordinary ways.
The name of the school was selected to focus attention on the schools
commitment to learning by doing and on its character as a place
of purposeful activity.
The school aims to develop a sense of community and is deliberately small. The teacher to student ratio is 1:6, with typically16 children in each
grade.

The
LP is committed to the notion that children of different ages have much to offer
one another, and in a small interactive and dynamic community this is possible.
Many activities occur across the seven grades for the purpose of mixing children of different ages
so as to provide them opportunities to teach and learn from one another, to
build friendships, and to have role models across age lines.
While we spend most of every school day
on the development of a range of scholastic abilities, we care most about the
development of each childs character: who they are, who they are becoming,
how they feel about themselves, how they care for others and how they regard
their responsibility to the community.
