Summer in the City
Summer in the City banner
Summer in the City is a full-day, educational summer program for children entering Kindergarten through entering third grade that offers daily adventures in the city, together with arts and crafts, sports, movement and cooking activities in the afternoon.

Adventure Time
Scheduled for the morning, these local trips will be “adventures with a purpose”—exciting, fun and intentional. A walk into the South End will teach about urban gardening, a walk to Copley Square about the architecture of grand spaces, and a walk to the Public Garden about leaf shapes and summer flowers—and the pleasures of a ride on the Swan Boats. When children return from their adventure, they will draw and write in their passports and have them officially stamped—a permanent record of their urban travels.

Guided Activity
A 45-minute period of music/movement, science exploration, physical education or cooking.

Let's Read
During this time, a variety of reading activities occur—read aloud, partner reading, or reading on one’s own (if able to do so).  This time spent with books each day will help children maintain their literacy skills over the summer.

Arts and Crafts
Later in the afternoon we will have arts and crafts time. This time will often incorporate the things that we have found or learned about during our morning adventure.

Thoughts on
Summer in the City

“There are so many great places to explore in the heart of the city during the summer. We often look right past places we walk by everyday, and I love helping the children to learn about and enjoy all of the fun places that may be just around the corner.”
            - Suzanne Bates, Program Director

“I appreciated the activities at Summer in the City and the places they explored. My son came home each day excited about the concoctions they made for snack and the walking adventures they took. I was also particularly impressed with the attention the teachers paid to my son. While they had lots of fun, they also focused on his individual needs and that eased my worries about his experience as a first time participant. By the end of the summer he was even more ready for first grade than he had been in June.”
            - Parent

“It was fun because I made older friends and they could help with
stuff...like when we made pizza!”

             - Kindergartener

“My favorite day was when we went and played at the Frog Pond. It was really fun.”
            - First Grader

“I did a lot of fun things like making frisbees, going to see flowers and playing Legos with my friends.”
             - Second Grader

“It was awesome when we got to see the whole city from the top of the Prudential Center.”
            - Second Grader
